Studio apartment drastically over-insured

HARRISBURG, Pa. – A studio apartment was radically over-insured this week when tenant Todd Spinner purchased the minimum amount of renters insurance for his downtown Harrisburg dwelling, offering him $25,000 worth of protection for his possessions.

Spinner, a 27-year-old freelance graphic designer, whose aggregate belongings are valued at approximately $1,900, said he wanted the peace of mind that comes with an insured living space.

“Where would I sleep if someone came in and took the blankets off my floor? Or how would I listen to my music if my clock radio was stolen?” questioned Spinner, who estimates he owns $200-400 in vintage movie posters alone. “Sure, you can’t replace some things. I just feel more secure knowing I can start over if anything happens.”

Spinner’s recent investment in a wireless computer mouse prompted him to attain the property coverage. Though the worth of his possessions amounts to less than one tenth of his rental coverage, Spinner sees the gap as allowing plenty of room for new purchases.

With his recent logo design work for a local motorcycle dealership, Spinner guesses he will have an additional $40 of income this month, which he says will likely be used for apartment updates like light bulbs or a folding chair.

“It’s comforting to know I’m protected as I accumulate more luxuries,” Spinner said, adding that he also is considering putting a more secure deadbolt lock on his door.
