New York City pretty unprepared for Giants victory parade

February 7, 2008 | Issue 5-06

NEW YORK – A New York Giants Super Bowl victory celebration parade made its way through an unprepared and unsuspecting Lower Manhattan Tuesday after city officials failed to prepare for such an event.

Tuesday’s scene was chaotic, as The Office of the Mayor shot down plans to schedule extra security to block off streets. “We discussed it and decided there was no way [the Giants] would win,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “I didn’t even make a wager with [Boston mayor Thomas] Menino.”

The parade took police by surprise, and several officers even attempted to stop the procession at one point, demanding to see a permit. Said Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, “I knew the Giants were going to be in the Super Bowl, but I never heard anything about them winning it. I heard a lot about the Patriots losing, but I guess I just didn’t make that connection.”

Many residents, like Commissioner Kelly, were taken aback by the seemingly irrational parade. “I was just trying to get to work” said Tim Hermer, a 34-year-old stock broker. “I didn’t know what all those people were doing out on the streets. I looked over and saw a float with a guy that looked kind of like Peyton Manning. I swear it could have been his younger brother.”

Some commuters navigating the disruptive parade speculated possible reasons for it. “I had no idea what it was,” said Justin Hill, a commuter caught in the crowds. “I saw muscular men on the float shouting out ‘I love you, thank you’ and I just figured it must be some gay pride thing.”
