Mother incorrectly assimilates 'Google' into everyday speech
April 8, 2008 | Issue 5-14
The mother of three, who replaces most Internet-related terms with the
newly-learned ‘Google,’ has begun using it so liberally and erroneously that her
children are reluctant to bring friends over to their home.
Nancy Culberson, however, reports excitement over her newfound vocabulary and
said she uses any opportunity to show off her hip, tech-savvy lingo, often
eliciting corrections from her children.
“We were in the grocery store yesterday and I told her she couldn’t use ‘Google’
to describe the self-scan aisle,” said Culberson’s 17-year-old daughter, Sarah.
“She doesn’t even know what Google’s web address is. She types ‘Google’ into the
Comcast home page search box.”
Though her tech language lacks in accuracy, repeated attempts by her children to
curb her varied and numerous misuses have had little effect on Culberson’s abuse
of the search engine term.
“After I Googled an email to my friend in Kentucky, I went to Yahoo and did a
Google for ‘those funny pictures of cats,’” said Culberson, who is especially
pleased with the new books her son Googled for her from Amazon.com. “I hope all
this time spent Googling won’t increase our computer bill this month.”
