Inexperienced church actor mistakenly crucifies Pontias Pilate

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – An Easter Sunday reenactment went awry last Sunday when first-time church actor Bill Hughes incorrectly nailed to a cross the actor playing the role of Pontias Pilate. Hughes, who was playing the part of an unnamed Roman guard, reportedly became disoriented during a procession down the main aisle of New Horizon First Church of Christ when several actors lined up in an order different from the previous evening’s rehearsal. “I knew I was supposed to grab the guy in the beard, but I panicked when someone skipped a line right before my cue,” lamented Hughes, who incorrectly assumed the actors attempting to prevent Pilate’s crucifixion were doing so as part of their roles. While the appropriate actor was eventually beaten and crucified, many in the congregation felt slighted by the mistake, estimating Sunday’s service lasted an additional five minutes. It was not the first time for production issues to arise at New Horizon. During a 2006 Christmas service, a prop mishap caused the actor playing Mary to lay a cardboard sheep into a manger.
