LUBBOCK, Tex. – Nickelback lead singer Chad Kroeger could only elicit responses of ‘whoooooo’ to each question posed to a crowd of more than 10,000 fans Saturday at the sold out United Spirit Arena. Despite the rocker’s meaningful questions, the raucous mob only offered raised fists and loud screams as answers.

“I guess I shouldn’t have led off with ‘How you feeling, Lubbock?’ and ‘Is everyone ready to rock?’” said the rock group’s front man. “I really was interested in what they thought about the war in Iraq. ‘Whoooooo’ wasn’t the response I wanted.”

Kroeger hoped to use concert venues to open up meaningful discussions on serious topics such as world health, foreign affairs and stem-cell research. He admitted a concert may not lend itself to such activity after Saturday’s failed attempt.

Fans say they were unaware the singer intended the questions to be answered seriously. “I just thought we were supposed to yell,” said concertgoer Jeff Baumgardner. “Usually the singer just wants you to be loud and go crazy when he asks a question, or maybe throw underwear on the stage.”

Rock star Tommy Lee attended the show while on vacation and said the audience was correct to assume ‘whoooooo’ an appropriate response. He then added “I was totally with Pam Anderson.”
