January 10, 2008 | Issue 5-02

NEW YORK—In response to a countless number of requests, warnings and reprimands from parents and teachers, America’s 10-year-olds are saying “Big deal.” The retort came as millions of 10-year-olds return to school and again face a plethora of academic responsibilities. The 10-Year-Olds of America (10YOA), a group of 10-year-olds organized to reduce homework and chores, formally responded to such comments as “You will have to start waking up early again” and “The winter vacation is over now.” The reply marks the first occasion 10YOA has reacted officially to authority figures since the summer, when the organization announced “You can’t make me” to parents nationwide who were insisting 10-year-olds clean their rooms.
