History

In 1984, Henry Madison had a vision of creating a newspaper committed to publishing what the public needed to know. He did not want to be influenced by advertising and corporate interests, so in 1985 he launched a publication called The Knowledger in Chicago. Madison gave the paper the tagline "Knowledgeable news for a public in the know." The newspaper reported the truth, unfettered by corporate concerns, often to the chagrin of advertisers.

The young Madison's dream was becoming a reality. By 1987, The Knowledger had a staff of eight writers and a readership of 60,000.

However, in February 1988 a tragic zoo accident caused production of the growing newspaper to halt, and gave birth to Madison's now-popular nickname 'Fingers.'

The driven publisher would not quit. After years of recovery, Madison was at it again, launching The Giant Napkin in 1996.

Still the inspiring force of the publication, Fingers continues to be a part of the editorial board, committed to delivering "News done right." He also writes a regular column, "Fingers Point," for TheGiantNapkin.com.
